Every one of us is part of a generation that had and continues to have an effect on our world. Here at MBN, we have had everyone from the Greatest Generation to Gen X to the newest Alpha Generation paint our PBN collection.
Today we'll take a look at paint by numbers through the generations. The MBN collection make great gifts for parents, grandparents, and children. We can learn a little about the generations while we take a peek at some fabulous paintings! First up, of course, is the Greatest Generation (1901-1927).
The Greatest Generation (GI Generation): Born 1901-1927
This generation lived through the Great Depression and then went off to fight in WWII. Due to events in this generation, traits like hard work and grit were the norm. Men, as well as women, "pulled themselves up by the bootstraps" and just got on with it. This is why we have always been told there will never be another like them. Our MBN family consists of some from this generation to this day, painting well into their late 90's and even up to 101 years old! They will never be forgotten.
The Silent Generation: Born 1928-1945
The Silent Generation famously got their name for being so conformist. The Silent Generation grew up in the chaos of war and the Great Depression. Fearing the turmoil faced in their youth, they stayed in line, remaining silent so as not to cause trouble. Such behaviours inspired their other name, the "traditionalists". During this era, kids were expected to earn their way through life using a strong work ethic. This work ethic served them well and they were instrumental in passing it on to the next generations.
Baby Boom Generation: Born 1946-1964
Gen Z may think of Baby Boomers as their out-of-touch grandparents ("OK, Boomer"), but they had a wild youth we often don't talk about. Boomers were named such after their parents came home from WWII, and the world population exploded. Baby Boomers defied their parents, protested the Vietnam War, and created the "Summer of Love"...not to mention fostering the popularity of The Beatles!
Generation X: Born 1965-1980
So often dismissed as the slacker generation, Generation X lived through the cold war, MTV culture, and a shifting cultural landscape. They have their feet firmly planted between the technology age and the rotary phone age. Gen X are known for being self-sufficient and not letting the little things bother them.
Unlike their Boomer parents, who famously let their kids stay outside until the streetlights came on, Generation X parents have a tendency to be far more involved with their children's social and educational development.
Millennial Generation or Generation Y: Born 1981-1996
Millennials lived through 9/11, remember when Amazon only sold books, and are also the first generation to know a childhood both with and without the Internet, which now plays a significant role in their personal lives.
While Boomers may accuse Millennials of being self-centered and entitled due to their excessive use of technology, this generation has proved to be incredibly community oriented. They are well traveled and not afraid to try new things.
Generation Z or iGen: Born 1997-2010
While still "youngsters" and not old enough to have made their mark as a generation, Generation Z kids are the first to be born in a world where they know nothing else besides being constantly connected to one another, albeit through phones, screens, and tablets. They have vacationed in places previous generations have only dreamed of due to the low cost and ease of travel in their lifetime. We have high hopes for this generation that they prove to be as resilient as their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.
Generation Alpha: Born after 2010
In 2019, kids born after 2010 were identified as part of Generation Alpha. Generation Alpha is the first generation of kids who will never know a time when social media didn't exist, and they are much more tech-savvy than any generation previously. It is possible this generation will circle back to an easier time when things ran a little more slowly and we stopped to smell the flowers more often.
Whichever generation you are a part of, I hope you have enjoyed this generational tour through paint by numbers.
